Dr Michael Wong
Dr Michael Wong is a senior consultant urologist who is internationally recognised for his surgical expertise and academic contribution to the field of urology, in particular the subspecialised field of minimally invasive endourology.
Currently, he is the Medical Director and Senior Consultant of the Urology, Fertility and Gynaecology Centre at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, and has been the Associate Editor at the prestigious British Journal of Urology International since 2013.

Personal Achievements & Contributions
Dr Michael Wong’s expertise and generous efforts to promote endourology led to his election to the Board of Directors (2005-2010) of the prestigious Endourological Society and World Congress of Endourology and Uro-technology based in the USA. To date, he is the only urologist from ASEAN to sit with the other world opinion leaders and experts in Urology. This is the highest peer recognition one can achieve.
He is also the only urologist from Asia to be appointed Co-Chairman of the WHO 2nd International Consultation on Stone Diseases held in Paris. This consultative committee of urology experts meets about every 5 years to discuss and map out the guidelines and direction for the rest of the world’s urologists in their management of kidney stone diseases. This appointment recognises that Dr Wong is a world leader.
In 2022, Dr Wong was elected to be the Principal Director of the Asian School of Urology. In this position, he oversees the UAA academic programme in 26 Asian National Associations & facilitates collaboration with the American Urological Association & European Urological Association. This is a prestigious appointment recognising years of dedicated academic work by Dr Wong.
In 2018, he was elected to be part of a 5-member Exco of the Urological Association of Asia (UAA). Dr Wong was appointed to this prestigious role by the National Presidents of 26 Asian Urological Associations. It is a privilege to serve in this important role to oversee urological activities in Asia.
In 2015, he was appointed as Deputy Director of the Asian School of Urology (ASU) to oversee ASU urological training programmes in Southeast Asia, Indochina, Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. This is in recognition of Dr Wong’s standing amongst his peers.
Dr Wong is the Founder President of the Asian Society of Endourology which started in 1998. This network of eminent Asian urologists made it their mission to impart their skills and expertise to junior members. His contribution to urology in the region especially impressed Thailand and Japan. In 2006, the Thailand Urological Association conferred him the title of Life Honorary Member, the first Singaporean thus recognised. In 2003, he was made a Life Member of the Japanese Endourology & ESWL Society.
Dr Wong was elected by his peers to be President of the Singapore Urological Association from 2009 to 2012. This is the body that represents all Urologists (both academic & private) in the whole of Singapore.)
From within Asia, many urologists have learnt from his vast experience and training. Dr Michael Wong is the Founder and Chief Trainer for the Singapore General Hospital Regional Endourology Fellowship Programme. Since 1998, even established urologists, including those from as far as Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, China, and Indonesia, have come to Singapore to learn the minimally invasive techniques of Endocology & Female Urology in particular Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL).
Dr Wong is able to creatively manipulate the endoscope to remove large stones embedded in the kidney completely more than 98% of the time, via a mere 0.5 cm cut in the skin. Traditionally, large kidney stones are removed manually by making a large incision over the skin and splitting open the kidney. Recovery is thus slower and more painful.
He has also travelled extensively to share his surgical skills and teach in surgical live demonstrations and technique-based workshops in many countries such as USA, Germany, Italy, Holland, Scotland, Mexico, South Africa, Canada, Australia, England, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Myanmar, Taiwan, Nepal, Brunei, and China.
In 1993, after completing his post-graduate Fellowship in General Surgery from Edinburgh and Singapore, Dr Wong left for the USA for one year to become the first Singaporean Urologist to obtain an American Fellowship in Endourology and Urolithiasis at the Institute of Kidney Stone Disease in Indiana. Dr Wong worked with the highly acclaimed Dr James E Lingemann, who remains his mentor and friend. Dr Wong was inspired to continue training in America in a completely different subspecialty and obtained a Fellowship in Female Urology and Neurourology at the Methodist Hospital, Indiana, another Singaporean first.
In 2000, Dr Michael Wong set up a joint service, The Male Fertility Clinic, with Dr Julianah Abu from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Singapore General Hospital. This clinical service enabled couples to have their treatment managed together at the same time, especially benefitting couples with a male cause for infertility as otherwise, the diagnosis is usually delayed because the male partner is rarely consulted and examined until much later. This unique team has tackled female & male fertility issues simultaneously, which has led to invitations to regional centres.
When the robotic-assisted laparoscopic machine became available in Singapore, Dr Michael Wong was the first to undertake a residency programme in Robotic Urologic Surgery in 2004 at the University of Irvine, California, USA, to perform procedures such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer.
Dr Michael Wong has served as a senior transplant surgeon for the Singapore Kidney Transplant Surgical Team Ministry of Health, since 1991. He has been accredited by the Ministry of Health to perform kidney transplants since 1996.
Academic Contributions
Dr Michael Wong’s international academic contributions are equally impressive. He was elected by his international peers to serve as the President of the prestigious Endourological Society and the World Congress of Endourology and Uro-Technology for 2026. He is only the fourth Asian urologist outside of the USA to hold this position since 1983—truly a remarkable testament to Dr Wong’s journey as a urologist of international standing.
Dr Wong is also the recipient of the 2024 Urological Association of Asia Honorary Member Award, the highest honour in Asian urology. This award recognises his standing as a urologist and his active contributions to improving urological services in Asia over the past 30 years. He is only the third Singaporean to receive this prestigious award.
In 2013, he was appointed Associate Editor at the prestigious British Journal of Urology International (BJUI) knowledge. He has also served as an editorial and committee member of the Journal of Endourology, the world's biggest subscribed academic reference journal for Endourology, which publishes some of the world’s best research in the field.
Dr Wong also sits on the International Scientific Committee of the World Congress of Endourology from 2001 to 2010. He has published more than 78 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, written 5 chapters in books on urology, is editor of 4 urology books, and delivered more than 150 international lectures.
He was also elected in 2009 to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Urology based in Japan. He has certainly made Singapore’s presence felt in the international arena.
Leadership Positions
Dr Michael Wong’s energetic leadership and achievements extend beyond Urology. He is equally talented and passionate about his role as a hospital management consultant.
Dr Wong sits on the Executive committee of the Urological Association of Asia. He is privileged to be nominated by his international peers to this position.
Dr Wong is well-regarded by both his patients and colleagues. He has won praise and acknowledgement for both his surgical expertise as well as his caring and compassionate nature. He has many excellent patient testimonials and won several Quality Service Awards from the Singapore General Hospital.
Dr Wong was a Public Service Commission Scholar for Medicine of the Government of Singapore and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 1985. He obtained his postgraduate degree in General Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1990, and Singapore in 1990 and was conferred a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore and Fellow of the International College of Surgeons in 1995.
In 2007 at 46, Dr Wong began a new journey in private practice. He is the Medical Director and Senior Consultant of the International Urology, Fertility and Gynaecology Centre at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital. He maintains his position as a Visiting Consultant and Senior Lecturer for postgraduate and undergraduate doctors at the Singapore General Hospital and the National University of Singapore.
